On April 3rd, 2013, University of San Diego Coaching Corps Chapter members volunteered in the Community & Aquatic Safety Awareness Team (CASAT) at the Jackie Robinson YMCA.
CASAT focuses on aquatic safety and personal safety, leadership and teamwork, mental-strength, effective handling of emergency situations, community involvement and healthy habits. Alongside the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego Life Guard Association, Coaching Corps members worked with 9 to 16 year olds from the Southeast San Diegan community. The youth were divided into three groups rotating between the pool, soccer arena, and police department demonstrations and lectures.
Coaching Corps members Maddie Lenard, Will Jolly, and Jack Schloetter were stationed in the soccer arena, focusing on leadership and teamwork through a series of soccer drills and scrimmages.
Jackie Robinson YMCA’s Aquatic Director, Deborah Milham, explained, “Without Coaching Corps’ volunteers, the quality of our program would have been dramatically reduced. Not only did they keep the kids occupied, but they provided safe, fun, and constructive activities. The Y emphasizes character development, and Coaching Corps not only carried this tone, but ran with it on the field this week.”
