Meet Coaching Corps’ Game Changer of the Month Shawn Granberry

Coaching Corps is proud to announce this month’s “Game Changer of the Month”, Shawn Granberry

Many in the entertainment industry may know Shawn Granberry as the trailblazing CEO of “Hip Hop TV” and the “Watch Now Networks”. What they may not know is that Shawn, a proud native of Oakland California, and a twelve-year Coaching Corps veteran, is someone who has dedicated his life to giving back to young people in under-resourced communities.

Over a decade ago Shawn started the Scholar Athletic Union (SAU) with good friend and NBA Hall of Famer Jason Kidd. Through SAU, Shawn helps inner-city youth in Oakland realize their potential through sports and academics so that they may achieve a college education. The Basketball Skills Camp now serves 60-100 local youth each camp in partnership with the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department. Every college volunteer is a Coaching Corps trained coach.

Shawn also donates his time at the Emeryville Citizens Assistance Program whose mission is to provide food, household furnishings, care, and compassion to those in need in the surrounding Bay Area communities. At the height of the nationwide shutdown, alongside ECAP staff and fellow Coaching Corps volunteers, including Antonio Davis, Shawn helped distribute food to thousands of neighbors and families hardest hit by the effects of the pandemic.

Most recently Shawn partnered with Coaching Corps and our very own Robert Marcus, Director of Government and Community Engagement, and other BIPOC community stakeholders to help launch our Racial Equity and Access in Youth Sports Task Force with the purpose of developing a pro-equity agenda for more racially equitable youth sports opportunities and increase the number of Black and Brown coaches trained in sports-based youth development.

This week, Shawn will be appearing as a panelist on Coaching Corps and MOJO’s joint webinar, “Why Empathy Is Your Coaching Superpower”, which seeks to provide coaches with tools and resources to learn how to lead with empathy. In this effort, Shawn has been an invaluable voice in helping us to achieve our goal of providing Empathy Training to more than 10,000 coaches of youth in under-resourced communities.

As someone with a boundless sense of passion and commitment to our youth, please join us in celebrating Shawn Granberry as our Game Changer of the Month and someone that we are proud to have at the very core of Coaching Corps!
